Common Complaints of Pain
Toothache
Toothache from large cavities can damage the tooth's nerve or pulp and create aching pains that last for hours, sometimes waking people in the middle of the night. The infection can spread to the surrounding bone and gum creating a lot of pressure in the area which adds to the pain.
Gum Disease
Severe gum disease resulting in inflamed gums and bone loss can cause pain when eating, brushing or when any pressure is applied. Loose teeth can make it difficult to eat and can tear from the gums as chew.
Jaw Pain
Jaw pain is can happen from a multitude of reasons. Some of the more common reasons are from overworked muscles due to stress, inflamed wisdom teeth, worn joints and poor teeth alignment.
Pain Management
Before treatment can be given our dentists will need to have a look at the problem and figure out what is causing the pain. It is best to have a good understanding of your medical conditions and medications you take throughout the year. We will need to complete further diagnostics tests such as xrays and pulp testing to find an accurate answer. From here the dentist can discuss the cause of the problem and the best way to treat it.
Our dentist can provide pain relief treatment on the same day if appropriate. Usually follow up appointments will need to be made to make sure the cause of the pain is under control. More appointments are necessary for treatments that involve multiple steps such as root canal or gum treatment. If these appointments are not attended it is very likely the pain will return as the condition continues to deteriorate.
Preventing Dental Pain
Routine check ups are the best way to identify any issues early on and prevent them from causing pain and extensive damage. Our knowledgable clinicians can help you find any diseases that are in their early stages and discuss options to manage them.
Brushing correctly twice a day and cleaning between teeth at least once daily is the best way to take care of our teeth and prevent stains from returning. Limiting sugary and acidic foods will slow down the damage from plaque which can darken and damage teeth. Drinking water after every meal and snack to wash away the sugar and food debris will help too.
